A case of mitral papillary muscle rupture due to blunt chest trauma.
Mitral regurgitation due to papillary muscle rupture after blunt chest trauma is uncommon. Sudden onset severe mitral regurgitation may lead to death due to heart failure if surgical repair is delayed. A previously healthy 12-year-old girl underwent splenectomy and chest tube insertion for pneumothorax after a traffic accident in a vehicle 15 days before. She was discharged from the hospital af...
متن کاملTraumatic aortic and mitral valve injury following blunt chest injury with a variable clinical course.
Blunt trauma is uncommonly followed by intracardiac valvar injuries. The resulting valvar insufficiency rapidly or progressively leads to congestive heart failure or death unless surgically corrected. Three patients with sustained blunt chest trauma were found to have two aortic valve and one mitral valve ruptures. They had variable clinical courses. However, after the diagnosis was established...
متن کاملAcute aortic and mitral valve regurgitation following blunt chest trauma.
Traumatic rupture of intracardiac structures is an uncommon phenomenon although there are a number of reports with regards to rupture of the tricuspid, mitral and aortic valves. We report the case of a 25-year-old patient who presented with acute aortic and mitral valve regurgitation of traumatic origin. Both lesions were seen separated by 2 weeks. Pathophysiology is reviewed. The combination o...

We present two successfully treated cases of mitral valve rupture following blunt chest trauma. A review of the literature demonstrates the rarity of this condition and the categories of injury pattern as demonstrated by our patients.

tree, which showed no evidence of tears or fresh blood. A left chest drain was inserted with immediate drainage of 1600 ml of blood. The drain was removed after three days, with a chest radiograph before discharge (eight days) showing regression of the mediastinal haematoma and expansion of the lung. In this case, despite the moderate trauma, both the chest radiography and computed tomography r...
